The Challenge:
While working as a student assistant at Spelman College, I was tasked with creating a direct mail postcard to go out to all current alumna reminding them that it’s time to submit honorary degree nominations.
The Approach:
Because this was a time sensitive project, I decided to utilize Canva over Adobe Illustrator. The client provided images and copy. From there, I played around with the typography to ensure all of the vital information fit onto the card while still being visually appealing. I made sure to use Spelman’s school colors and branding through the process as well, to give it the extra boost it needed to stand out.
One thing that I would improve upon is adding in a QR code instead of just listing the entire link. As I was talking through the project with the client, we agreed on listing the link with the knowledge that the majority of alums that will receive this postcard are older adults (60+ years old) who may not understand how to use a QR, but generally know how to type out a link. Even though I knew the QR code made more sense, this was a great example of meeting people where they’re at with my design and being adaptable.
The Results:
Alumna response rate (tracked by webpage visits) increased by +30%. The President of the college also gave her praises when presented with it (a huge kudos as a student).
